Hello Downtowners-

We can't decide. Are the huge crowds about town early Christmas shoppers or just ongoing proof of the city's renaissance?

Either way the increase is noticable - trying to get home last Thursday it was like the Christmas Eve rush!
Our Events page is getting better, more people contacting us to promote thier event. We only place a small selection of events as there are just too many to put them all on. Check it out?

Also take a look at the likes of the Dadafest and Cornerstone taking place at many downtown venues from Wednesday.

'You Are Downtown'

Downtown

Take the bus to Princes Dock
Further to our report on developments on Princes Dock last time we can add that if you fancy a latte in Coffee Union down there (recommended) before you pop into the fantastic Loop Gallery you can get there by taking the Smart Bus service numbers 2 or 3 (details www.merseytravel.gov.uk or 0151 330 1066)- and of course, you can get it back again - should be excellent in a few years time!

Should be a nice view though!
A strange suburban looking development is taking place at the top of Low Hill, overlooking the urban masterpiece Islington industrial sheds -we will post a pic and more details when we can.

Christmas is almost here
Only two more downtown farmers markets before Christmas folks, be sure to get downtown either 4th or 18th December to get those nice organic goodies for Christmas dinner. Call 0151 233 2165 for venue details (moved from Chavasse park, small project going on there or something!)

Massive injection for Downtown Library
Over £30m has been earmarked for a major resource in the Walker Gallery, Central Library and Museums on William Brown St - excellent stuff - this is the busiest local history record office in the UK. We wonder if they would still be interested in Prof Taylor's project?

The best of downtown talent
LIPA hold regular public programmes and this winter's looks decidedly good. Check out the website and book a night out to see some VERY talented young students...take a walk around the district rather than going straight home...nice neighbourhood!

Top 'O' the World Maa
Ring 0151 709 3285 to take a trip to the top of downtown's Radio City Tower. The Christmas lights look great from up there! Also check out this interesting link on the BBC Radio 3 Architecture page about the tower from one of the Liverpool's well known urbanists.

Whilst you're about it, try and pan out the area that you think is the World Heritage Site, its 'buffer zone' and then pop round to the tourist shop in Queen Sq and see how right you are by picking up the natty little 'World Heritage City' booklet/map thing, we think you will be amazed! If you can't get there soon log onto www.liverpoolworldheritage.com and take a peek.

City

'It's the ECONOMY - stoopid!'
News that Liverpool has outstripped its competitor cities in jobs and business growth [link] as well as there being more people taking up their 'right to buy' has astounded some, just why exactly?

They're all at it now
Liverpool City Council reckon that they publish 'Newliverpool, a business friendly magazine'. We've not come across one yet - maybe give them a call?! Never mind if you can't find one either, business enterprise and advice is all over the place as well as a host of listings and 'Whats On' mags. Two worth a look at are www.livemagazine.co.uk and www.visitcityguide.com

Bye Bye Biennial

This year's 2004 Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art has been a cracker. Congrats to Lewis and the team and all the artists. Ends Sunday.

Metropolis

Up in Smoke
Commiserations to our North Wales' cousins who lost a Gilbert Scott (architect of Liverpool Cathedral) masterpiece last month. Grade 1-listed Hafodunos Hall in Llangernyw was destroyed by arsonists. BBC news

A small part of common culture
Just a note to say that Wrexham Football Club (the oldest club in Wales) is in dire financial straits. Help in what ever way you can, even if it is just to get along to a game or two? See you there?

Did nobody see the irony in this?
TV Moguls from around Europe visited Liverpool at the weekend, pity there were no TV station CEO's from the Bay Area to accompany them, or indeed, the arrogance in this:and you thought a huge rejection would kill off the 'regional project?

Just one more reason to sign up for this

National / International

We have been having some important and wide-ranging discussions on Liverpool's International dimension and potential- quite refreshing- more in time, but for now check out on some of the activity taking place:

Little old Westerly knows how to stimulate downtown culture - they made the districts tax free!
Someone should tell Jayne Casey at Afoundation.

Public spaces help make great places, check this out to see some really good lessons for downtown Liverpool.

'Downtown revitalisation' generally brings to mind the centres of big cities, though as the above example shows, some of the greatest successes in the States have been in reviving the cores of what would over here compare to our Micro cities and small towns! Llandudno?

Downtown Liverpool is not just 'another investment option' as we keep on saying, this report from West Virginia helps to illustrate why downtown really matters. We also like this blog as it states quite clearly what we have been cautioning about in Liverpool for so long!

This article from Tulsa reminds us that there is a counter argument to 'improving downtown access from Edge Lane', what comes in can just as easily (and usually does!) escape the other way on the same route.

Fantastic site of New York's skyscrapers.
Explore chronologically, Alphabetically or by Style/era!

Finally - helping out
We have taken much inspiration from downtown revivals across the globe, but we must remember that, compared to many, our problems are miniscule. Liverpool City Council has been involved in Fair Trade for some time now and we have just come across this gem of an idea.
