Hello Downtowners -

NEWS SPECIAL - PARADISE STREET DEVELOPMENT APPROVAL

As you will all now be aware the news has been announced that the £750m Grosvenor scheme for the redevelopment of the Paradise Street area of Liverpool (PSDA) has been given the official go-ahead by the UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott. This is an event of huge significance for the city!

The city is at last beginning to undo the worst excesses of the 1960's Shankland Plan - PSDA will re-emphasise streets and active street frontages, integrate public transport and get people living and working in the heart of downtown.

DL has supported PSDA from the very start, our concerns only related to our view that the scheme is under-developed, that the opportunity is there to create a Metropolitan experience rather than a mere retail destination.

It's now in the hands of Liverpool City Council and others to ensure the consequences to the rest of the downtown retail are positively addressed and we are glad to hear both the leader and chief executive give their assurances of this.

DL hopes that the commercial potential of the Strand as a boulevard, rather than a traffic corridor, will be realised.

We hope too that the number of apartments in time will be greatly increased - at present 345 dwellings over 42 acres falls woefully short of the UK Government's targets for sustainable development.
If meeting these targets means upping the building heights then so be it.

As for all of us in Liverpool, we will be seeing a transformation at the heart of downtown, the scale of which hasn't been seen for some time.

Let's then celebrate change and get on with the task ahead of Building a City.
