Liverpool eDigest

Hello Downtowners,

Welcome to your 25TH edition of the downtown digest.

There are currently some major developments taking place that could have a profound effect on downtown's future: principally the thinking behind the current (anti)Tall Buildings Policy that is currently out for consultation until the 4th March. We outline this and others below so forgive us a little negativity and forthrightness this once.

The psychoanalysts certainly have a point about January being a depressing month - thank God that it's over and we can move into friendly February! This is the only thing with any logic we can think of to account for the crazy recent planning decisions - how much ongoing rate income has that lost LCC? To say nothing about reputations.

Please stand up and be counted as proposals being made will genuinely stymie the chances of Liverpool really taking off. See the piece below and remember that in reality the journey to downtown revival has only just begun - let's not kill it off before we reach a critical mass.

Desperate news that Liverpool City Council's Planning Committee has recommended refusal for both these flagship tall buildings on Liverpool's waterfront.

For a fuller picture of the reasons 'why' check out the Liverpool Echo [link].

The reaction across Liverpool has been one of incredulity. The reaction in the press bewilderment.

To quote Ian Simpson's reaction:
"Liverpool doesn’t seem to believe in market led regeneration.." [more]

Have Your Say
Downtown Liverpool does not support Tall Buildings in every case, nor on issues of aesthetics alone. But we DO support investment in the city from quality development consortia and quality architects.

We also recognize the prestige value of signature schemes, the historical appropriateness in Liverpool of building big and the effect on civic pride major buildings have and the unique contribution tall buildings have on maximising urban activity. Visit our website for a more in-depth article on this.

Have you too felt angry at decisions such as these? Have you seen the 51 story Manchester Hilton currently on-site?

The City's proposed Tall Buildings Policy is out for consultation until the 4th March - so have your say.

And remember - the future development of Liverpool should not be predicated on the view of its skyline from Birkenhead..

EMAIL Development Control here with your comments.
Please be polite, and include your full name, address and the name of your organisation.

Downtown

More to downtown than just shops and clubs
Our two cathedrals host plenty of social and cultural initiatives and support groups to give an example. The Anglican Cathedral is applying for funds to help it widen its remit further, whilst the Metropolitan Cathedral held the city-region's Civic mass last month. Both have plenty of choir groups and other amenity facilities to get involved with.

Metropolis

LJLA are bidding for direct flights to New York City from Liverpool
Could this be the first murmerings of an enterprise approach instead of nobbling our own economy by kowtowing to Ringway? Let's hope so!

National/International

A skyline to make us proud
Liverpool is part of an international community of cities - we have aspirations to rejoin the community of internationally significant cities of commerce and culture. Cities are thriving or reviving the WORLD OVER.

The Poll

In the last edition we asked:
" Are you For or Against the extension of licensing hours downtown to extend to 24h?"

Responses:
82% FOR
18% AGAINST

Thank you to all subscribers who voted.

  250 words max [optional]

More generally, what do you think Liverpool should do to 'civilise' downtown clubland?

Thanks for your participation, all responses are anonymous and the overall result will be published in edition 25.
