Hello Downtowners
,

Thanks to everyone who took part in and organised events for Downtown Week 05!

With the week now having successfully taken place, confidence in the concept has been established and support is growing. Press coverage, mainly through Radio Merseyside and the Daily Post and Echo was fantastic [1, 2]. Awareness of the week’s designation was widespread, a sound building block for next year now exists! Please take a moment to send us your comments at the foot of this email.

And June continues with a great programme for Architecture Week 2005 - a national event which this year has plenty to keep Liverpool urbanists busy!

Downtown

Why limit the potential?
Downtown is the exploratory and engine for a huge variety of activities, initiatives and enterprises.
We have never understood the Liverpool mentality of 'either, or'.
What downtown does is allow you to do it ALL.

Check out this downtown-based Social Enterprise portal www.sea-online.net which helps you work out how to do just that.

Delivering the goods?
The Culture Company are getting into full swing, building up their contribution to the city's potentially massive offer during 2008. Jason Harborow was recently interviewed by Business Insider, take a look at the article and see if you can gauge how downtown will measure up during the year .

Money Matters
Depressing news that now both the regional development agency and the EU objective one programme look likely not to give any money for LFC's new stadium [Daily Post].

It falls after news last week that the govt also does not wish to make up the £64 million shortfall on the revised costs for Line 1 of Merseytram [Regen.net].

As one reader reflected in the local letters page this morning:
"should the tram fail, we would have had eight years of a high-spending Labour government in a booming economy, helped by billions of European money, without a single major public infrastructure project to show for it"

Phew!

Just as well then that at long last, Kings Waterfont is going ahead -

Kings Dock - Green Light

- with groundworks having started earlier this week [EP]

- and finally

What would you like more of in Downtown Week 2006?

Ist there anything else you would like to tell us about Downtown Week 2005? Then let us know here! Thanks
