Downtown growth continues to gather pace
A number of items highlighting continued confidence downtown have been released. Amongst the best; Phase two of the Metropolitan Cathedral scheme will soon be on site, Exchange Flags may be restored to it's rightful place at the heart of the commercial district and, possibly most important, initial proposals for the 'City Centre Movement Strategy' have been launched. City Council and Liverpool Vision call for input to shape the final plan ...please ensure that you do. Breaking down the devastating impact of the 1960's 'Shankland Plan' is a vital first step, if Liverpool's current boom is to be maintained. then made sustainable!

New hope of a 'clean sweep' downtown
The New Year should see improvements to the state of downtown's litter problem, with new street cleansing work practices being introduced. Good start, but what about washing the pavements every so often? Like every night - they do in Paris.

Downtown Public spaces for hire
Hiring space in downtown's squares and open spaces for an event could not be simpler. e-mail Tracy Fitzsimmons or call 0151 225 3685. All income raised is ploughed back into downtown initiatives.

Williamson Sq undergoing a revamp Nov 03

Next summer, downtown will have a major water feature and the square will again be available for events and celebrations

There are flats, and then there are aspirations!
Welcome news that a deal has been concluded to provide residential accommodation on Princes Dock
Prince's Dock Liverpool
...but what about plot 7 or the Liver Industrial estate?

Bright Lights, Big City - lighting the way to our bright future
The next phase in the city's architectural lighting strategy will take place in spectacular fashion this new years eve! The buildings in the William Brown St area have new schemes and these will be turned on at 5.30 along with a firework display...what we need next are loads of those giant plasma screens downtown to really brighten up the night time scene!

DOWNTOWN

Help for Downtown business to expand 'paying dividends'
A major aim of the 'City Centre Investment Programme' is to provide finance to help downtown business to expand. Ran by Liverpool Business Centre it is said to be already paying dividends. Could be worth making an enquiry? We couldn't find any reference to it on their site though!

East Village is helping to reanimate the Ropewalks Area of Downtown

A new restaurant recently opened in the complex. A few tall developments in the area now will supply the population levels needed to ensure the area really booms, those ground floor commercial units fill up, and then, who knows? Ropewalks is supposed to be our creative Qtr! (N.B. DL insist that the whole of downtown is the creative heart of the metropolis)

Good advice must be taken on board - for once!
Three links from icliverpool.

Experts from cities that have already been European cities of culture, gave some sage advice to those who will determine whether 2008 will fly or flop...fingers crossed everyone!

Related to the story above is this interesting report. Downtown Liverpool abhors the hand out mentality that delays, and sometimes ruins, so many potentially good initiatives here, but then we must insist on a level playing field with our urban competitors...what's good for them...!

Finally, an interesting little interactive map, highlighting some of Downtown's cultural hotspots. If your place isn't on there, make sure to call them.

COMMENT

Shanghai
Tremendous image of Birkenhead found!

Liverpool's 'Left Bank' looks stunning in this photo...mind you the Downtown side doesn't look too bad either...if only! Click the pic to find out more.

Many statements have been made in our planning department regarding the Unite Development by Lime St Station.
Amongst the jucier are;

'No more unite type, innapropriate and too big!"

'Utterly innapropriate in what should be a Georgian area'

(huh? about 150 years too late!)
'

'Horrid, Never, Over my dead body'
(we particularly like this one as it was said in the context of it even getting planning permission!!)

'We don't want slab type buildings in this part of town'
(does that mean these two next door are innapropriate carbunkles then?)

The controversial building itself!

How much embarrasment do you think is felt now that it is up and hardly an obtrusive blot on the skyline?
Why the provincial business park mentality amongst manyof those charged with our 'Urban Renaissance'?
These folk must remember that we live in a big city...the building COULD be better looking though!

Take a look at the pictures from the immediate area above and let us know if you agree that it is 'too big', 'obtrusive' or even 'out of character' for the district?
