Street Gateway

An ambitious
scheme to transform the environs of Liverpool Lime Street Station. The
Current site is blighted by visual clutter, poor pedestrian access and
under-investment in public realm. The revised scheme, given an overwhelming
thumbs-up in the recent public consultation by URC Liverpool Vision
will include:
-demolition
of the existing 15-storey Concourse Tower and its replacement with new
landmark Tower.
-demolition of the existing 60's retail units fronting the station and
replacement with hi-grade Piazza.
-relocation of the booking office into North Western Chambers
-resurfacing of the station concourse and other works
The new landmark building is anticipated to be at least 20 stories tall
and built to high environmental sustainability standards, it will also
take the form of an intriquing and elegant 'lozenge' shape to minimise
downdraft of wind onto Lime Street - a problem that the existing tower
faces.
Starting on-site early 2006, completed end of 2007.

The
Downtown Organisation supports intensification of development, design
innovation, tall buildings and mixed-use schema as these in general
make a positive contribution to the
establishment of a city-scape both for the establishment of a 21st century
city and for the tradition of metropolitan-scale development in Liverpool.
